Chapter Seven

I can hardly sleep at all tonight, anticipating what will mostly likely be an insane and hectic day tomorrow. Somehow, I manage a few hours of winks. When I wake up around noon, I’ve sort of almost forgotten about what happened last night. Then, when I reach over for my phone and it flies a couple of inches into my hand, I’m reminded of the evening’s events. Flashing lights. Screaming questions. I think I have a fan club now.

Okay, deep breath. Here goes.

I open up Twitter. And... there it is. Trending in your area is #WheresMetalia. I click on the hashtag and am immediately inundated with photos of myself, in full costume, using my powers on the two cars I stopped from colliding. There’s a bunch of photos all from different angles as well as some blurry photos of me up-close. The most common one shows me standing in between the two cars with my arms outstretched. I have to admit, it looks pretty heroic.

There’s a link to a new article by BKLYNR titled, “Everything We Know About Brooklyn’s Vigilante Metalia!” The article is mostly about last night with quotes from eyewitnesses. Surprisingly, they’re all positive. Just like the original article, this one ends with a call for information on my identity or whereabouts. They’re interested in interviewing me. I don’t really want to get caught up in all of this. It’s not like I even have time for it what with my job starting up again tomorrow, all of this business with figuring out what Gershwin’s up to, and not to mention keeping up my social life with Shia and Alex. For now, the public can deal with a little mysteriousness.

I slink out of bed and meander into the kitchen where Shia is seated at the table with a bowl of cereal in one hand and a PS4 controller in the other. “Yo,” She greets me, eyes glued to the screen. “You gotta check this out. You heard about this?”

I look over at the TV screen while I pour myself a giant cup of coffee. I’m not really all that surprised to see that Shia is watching a YouTube video from my adventure last night. It looks like it was taken by one of the bystanders at the night market. They’re filming the rows and rows of food stands until a loud crack goes through the street. The camera swerves over to the accident and then starts moving closer and closer to it. Whoever is filming this runs to the side of the street and gets a very clear shot of me standing in between the two cars, using my force to keep them from colliding.

“Who the fu–”

“What just happened? Did she–”

“That girl just stopped that accident!”

“Hey, that’s Metalia!”

The audio becomes overwhelming as people swarm the area. I leave the camera frame and the video shuts off.

I force myself to look surprised. “Yeah, I, uh, heard about her. Superhero, huh?”

Shia is shaking her head in surprise and delight and I wouldn’t be surprised if she plays the video again.
